Chloe had the wipers on full speed and still had to peer through the windscreen to see clearly. It was bucketing down and the wind was driving the rain sideways. Parking and making a dash along the street to the hospital had her wondering if calling in sick might’ve been a good idea. At least she’d have been warm and dry. As if she’d do that, she thought with a sigh.

‘Welcome to windy Wellington,’ she said to Devlin a quarter of an hour later as they both entered the ED hub at the same time, her hands itching to touch him again.

‘Who’d want to be on a ferry this morning?’ he agreed politely.

‘Not me, that’s for sure.’ The Interislander ferries running between Picton and Wellington often had high winds and huge swells, and it was not fun to be on board at those times. ‘Far prefer it when it’s perfectly flat. Which is very rare on the Cook Strait.’ Pulling up a chair, she sat down and brought up the screen to go through last night’s patient list and focus on anything but Dev. ‘What’ve we got, Jaz?’

‘It was a busy night. Two car crashes, a policeman shot in the arm, and one five-year-old with RSV.’ Jaz stretched, hands rubbing the small of her back. ‘I hope that’s not the beginning of more to come.’

‘It’s a fast-acting virus, highly contagious, especially amongst youngsters, so I expect to see more cases in the coming weeks,’ Devlin commented.

‘Throw in this being the middle of winter,’ Chloe muttered.

‘Agreed.’ Devlin was reading a file on the computer next to her. ‘Let’s hope it doesn’t get out of hand.’

A yawn gripped her. Beside her Dev was doing the same, and she couldn’t hold back a laugh. ‘You, too?’

‘Yes,’ he muttered.

‘Morning, everyone.’

Chloe glanced up and around, surprised to find the space filled with the day-shift staff. She hadn’t been aware of anyone other than Dev and Jaz. ‘Hi, Clare. Busy night by the looks of it.’

‘It was. Jaz, get out of here while you can. Everyone else’s gone.’ Clare got down to business. ‘Devlin, everyone, you’ve got a woman in cubicle ten, admitted at four with severe abdomen pain. Suspected kidney stone. We’re waiting on blood results and the urologist is due in before seven. A forty-five-year-old male, suspected mild stroke during the night, no known history. I’ve given him blood thinners, and we’re keeping him in under observation for a few hours.’

The list went on and Chloe divvied up the patients between the other nurses. ‘I’ll take triage,’ she told them at the end of Clare’s outline. That’d keep her out of the main area and away from Devlin most of the time. All part of downplaying her reactions to him, and staying sane for the day.

She needn’t have worried about getting too close to him. The day was manic with a steady stream of patients coming through the front door by foot or through the ambulance bay on a bed. At two o’clock she got a call from the head nurse, Sandy.
